But then he uncovers the pup and strokes it again, realizing that George will know he killed it because George always knows and Lennie won't get to tend the rabbits. Lennie becomes so angry that he hurls the dead puppy across the barn. Shortly after having thrown the puppy, Lennie picks it up again, stroking it and deciding that maybe George won't care.
Curley's wife enters the barn and asks Lennie what he has. Lennie repeats George's instructions that he is not to talk to her. She stays, however, and again asks him what he is covering up. When Lennie shows her the dead puppy, she tells him it was just a mutt and no one will care, but Lennie explains that George won't let him tend the rabbits because he did a bad thing again. Curley's wife tells Lennie of her life and her missed opportunity to travel with the show that came through her hometown.
Lennie responds absently with concern about his dream farm and the rabbits he will have. Following his comment, Curley's wife chatters on, explaining more about her lost chance to become an actress and how she met Curley.
Slim tells him to bring a shovel so he can bury the dog. Whit says that George and Lennie must have come to work. What reason does he give? They came on a Friday instead of Saturday. Most people come on Saturday to work one day, get fed, then leave on Sunday night after dinner. What does Whit invite George to do tomorrow night?
Why does George say he will go and get a drink but that he isn;t going to pay for a flop? He wants to save his money for the ranch What is Curley looking for? His wife. Lennie is in the barn with a small puppy in his hands that he accidentally killed by stroking it really hard! Because Lennie doesn't want to be away from his new pup. Because he knew it was lennie that killed her, so he leaves to give lennie enough time to leave the barn before everyone sees lennie there.
Slim's dog had a litter of puppies and Lennie will want to sleep in the barn with them. The barn darkening at the end of chapter 5: Almost in "a storm is coming" sort of way, the darkness falling over the barn after Curley's wife dies gives foreshadowing to the fact that even more death and dark times lie ahead in the last chapter. Foreshadowing Alert: Carlson's gun is missing. We know Lennie didn't take it. In 'Of Mice and Men' chapter three will only take a few munutes to read. Halfway through the chapter Curley comes on the scene, looking for his wife.
He thinks she is in the men's mess room. She isn't there. Noticing that Slim is also not there, he asks where Slim is. It looks as if Curley thinks that Slim is with his wife in the barn. Curley rushes out to the barn. However, Lennie tells the men in the room that Curley's wife is not in the barn. Slim returns, acccompanied by Curley. Slim is very annoyed that Curley keeps asking him if he's been keeping keeping company with his Curley's wife. Curley apologises.
A fight breaks out. Curley gets hurt, but is made to promises not to tell anyone, because it was he Curley that started it. Apart from this information, from the information in chapter three we know no more about Curley's thoughts. But we can guess! Log in. Before this episode, the reader might dismiss her as easily as George does.
She shows herself to be a flirt, a conscious temptress, and a manipulator. However, in the final moments before her death, Steinbeck presents his sole female character sympathetically. Her loneliness becomes the focus of this scene, as she admits that she too has an idea of paradise that circumstances have denied her.
It is disturbing, then, that Steinbeck seems to subtly imply that the only way for a woman to overcome that nature and restore her lost innocence is through death. As George realizes what Lennie has done, the painful mission that he must undertake becomes clear to him.
With this realization, the idea of the farm and the good life it represents disappears. There is no room for dreaming in such a difficult and inhospitable world.
